Using You Loft
Your loft is dry (assuming your roof is sound) and well ventilated. It is an ideal place to store all the things we can't throw away but don't want on show.
Even a small loft is huge in comparison to a cupboard.
You don't need planning permission to use your loft for storage or to board it.
A loft ladder makes accessing your loft easy.
It's dangerous to use steps that are too small or stand on the bannister. don't risk it
If you should have an electrician in its well worth having a light fitted. If you are the D.I.Y type even with the new " part P " requirements you are still allowed to fit one yourself.
How much weight can you put in your loft ? It does depend on the size of your ceiling joists, but consider most lofts can have a water tank and these weigh over a ton !
As a rule of thumb, if you can carry it up, it's ok. The one thing to be careful about is magazine collections. It's easy to take up a few at a time, but a lifetimes collection can be a lot of weight.
If you find signs of mice don't panic it's very common, simply place trays of " bait " in the loft until they cease to be eaten.
Don't use disassembled furniture panels for walking on, it's too slippery, we've had to repair several ceilings where peoples feet have slipped off.
Don't use old doors for walking on , take them to the dump.
Don't use ordinary chipboard for flooring, its not strong enough
Don't rest boards on top of electric cables.
Downlighters give off heat don't cover them without providing ventilation.
Consider having a smoke alarm in the loft : we've often seen charing caused by covered downlighters.
Don't store old carpet in the loft , it goes hard and then its very difficult to get out (and you never will use it).
Do label boxes you store so you know whats in them
If your loft is boarded you can assemble flat pack furniture in the loft (shelves storage boxes etc.) and have organised storage.
Make sure your water tank has a lid. The bathroom water you use to clean you teeth comes from here and you would be amazed what we've seen floating ... including dead birds.
