Enlarge Existing Loft Access

We can often enlarge an existing opening if it is too small. With a traditional roof construction with separate sloping roof rafters and horizontal joists it is acceptable to cut a joist (providing the correct supporting structure is fitted) and we can increase length and width. With the modern pre-trussed rafter system it is not acceptable to cut a joist(see note 3.) and whilst we can increase the opening length, we cannot increase its width.

Typical Procedure

First we will visit you to access the feasibility of the enlargement and agree the new size. A new housing/hatch assembly will be manufactured in our workshop.

We will then support the ceiling as necessary whist we cut the joist and fit the new support structure.

The ceiling will then be cut to enlarge the opening.

The new housing will be fitted

Temporary supports will be removed.

Notes : 1. The new housing is supplied finished and ready for painting

          2. With old lath and plaster ceilings there is always the possibility that a piece of plaster will become detached when we cut the opening. If this happens we will repair the damage, but not refinish the whole ceiling.
